I understand that. And while I agree that it's obviously better to get meaningful feedback, I'll admit [this is hard for me] to having a goal that I want to reach with my reviews - like, "I want to get at least five hundred reviews for this story by the time I get to chapter 20" or something...actually, i think i'll make that my goal for my current story...possibilities, possibilities...

I'm not a big reviewer, mostly because if I do leave a review it would only be a one-word review and those irk me so I don't want to be a hypocrite, you know?
Every now and then I'll review if something big happens or if it's my first time reading the story.

Don't you just find it a bit frustrating when you are writing a story, and you get 50+ alerts/favorites/both but only 2-3 reviews? I mean, if people can take the time to read a whole chapter, then surely they can spare the 2-3 minutes to give feedback on it. Hi there, yes I can understand that as a writer, it can be frustrating sometimes. People that read and don't review make me kind of nervous, because I always think that they don't like it.

I semi-agree with that. If someone is going to put your story on their "favorites" list, that probably means they like it. When they put in on their "alerts" list, it just means they don't want to lose track of it. When someone puts it on their 'alerts' list and don't review, THAT is when I become nervous that they don't like it and are merely reading it so they can have something to do...

I think it's weird when someone favorites a story but doesn't stop to say why they thought enough of it to favorite it.

well I'm still working on my first two stories but I know this, since I've been doing them I've become far more aware of the importance of reviews to a fanfic author. The fun of writing the thing and reviews are the only payoffs I see for what can be pretty hard work, (Which begs the question; why do I beta read? In my case I beta read for an uber talented 14 year old whom I want to encourage to develop her writing. In some instances it's already superior to mine) and takes a long time. As a result of this I review often, even if it just is a great chapter because often that's the only opinion I have if indeed it WAS a great chapter, I never lie in reviews. There's another side to this though. If something struck me in a negative way and I thought I could say something in a review to help the author I used to do that regularly. Since I got a membership to publish my story with I've stopped that after I once pointed out that a story had poor characterization and worse grammar.(It may not show here since I bang this stuff out quick but I'm sort of a grammar nazi, when things slip through in MY stories I come close to self mutilation) After receiving an expletive filled PM from the author AND a PM from a school friend of theirs claiming my review had made the author suicidal all my reviews are filled with sunshine these days. All that said i know how getting a bunch of reviews makes me feel (My last two chapters got 15 and then 11 and I did a little jig in my room) so I am not sparing in giving them. It's very little trouble to me and makes the author feel good, I know this from experience. If you really want people to review more force them to publish a story, then they will understand.

That's what was implied to me. I rather hope I misunderstood. I actually went as far as to go back and apologize for my original review.

If someone has that kind of reaction to a constructively critizing review they're better off not posting a story. Because it's a fact of life that someone, somewhere will absolutely detest your story, your plot, your writing etc.

Yup. I know there are some stories out there that I'd just rather not have bothered reading, and then others that I absolutely loved. Obvious my reviews for those stories would be extremely different. Not to say that I'd go out of my way to be rude about it or anything, just the...nice-ness (?) level.

In reference to favoriting a story and not reviewing:
I have a habit of favoriting a story that I'm in the process of reading just for the sake of easy access.
Providing constructive criticism can be a bit hairy. Some people find it offensive and others want it. Is it unreasonable to ask your readers to provide certain kind of reviews? I wouldn't think so. I mean, isn't that would FF is all about? A community of writers and readers to share their talents, thoughts, and opinions and then get feedback? I feel if someone wanted Cons-Crit, they would either get a beta or would ask for it in their notes section.
Personal reviewing If I am impressed by your writing, I will tell you sometimes even by personal message. I try not to review with just one word like "Great" but say what I thought was great. Or I bug you about updating. If I do that, then I really like your story haha.
Sorry this was so long!

Something happened today. I had placed an appeal for computer aid in as a chapter. Well eventually the issue fixed itself so today I removed the non chapter. As a result no one who'd reviewed the last chapter could review my new one I posted today. When I checked I had nine PM's telling me what they thought of the chapter and expressing outrage at FF because they could not review. That really made me feel special.

FF is one of the buggiest sites I've ever dealt with, and I don't understand it. I think whoever coded it was a moron.
