It seems lucrative but really it undermines your chances of getting any kind of representation. There are a few, like you can count them on one hand, who have managed to break out self publishing. About the only people who win are the ones running the self publishing presses.
E-publishing is a little more viable, but then you need to sell about 10000 copies before people start to take interest. So if you want to go self publishing and are bound and set to do it go E-publishing through someplace big like Amazon or B&N.
The major problem with that is that anyone can e-publish so if your book is good it's stuck with a major amount of shit that people have to wade through.

mhmm, and some of the agents' blogs that I read don't really see the self/e publishing really cutting into traditional publishing.
